We are only half way through this season of football. It is still going, but maybe one case away from the end.
The AFL have been lucky that there are states that are Covid "FREE".
The Victorian supporters are not seeing their teams in Melbourne, and being able to watch live football.
It must be killing AFL followers that they can not watch their teams week in week out.
The situation that the AFL have right now is what we will see for the remainder of 2020.Hubs in different states.Reduced game time,Clubs moving from state to state.Changes to fixtures at the drop of a hat.Short breaks between games for some sides.
But no football in Melbourne. That is a long long way off happening.
The rest of Australia have the chance to see some live football.WA is the luckiest out of all the states, allowing 30,000 to games.Maybe, shortly, it will creep out to 60,000.Or maybe if the Challenge to our borders is won by Palmer, we won't be able to see any football at all, other than on TV.
But maybe the football world had better get used to what we have in 2020.Maybe the "Home of AFL" Melbourne, will not have football again in 2021.
I know that the 2021 season is a long way off, but so is the slow down of the virus in Victoria.
What happens to the ten teams out of Victoria next season if the virus is not controlled.Where will they play. Will players be prepared to spend another 6 months away from family and friends.
Are we beginning to see the demise of the AFL?Can it , will it , survive without the Victorian clubs?
If the Victorian clubs, or some of them pull the pin, what happens to player contracts. What happens to the Grand Final contract that was under handedley done with the MCC.
If we think this season has been hard, let us just wait and see what next season brings.
Will the AFL continue if the Victorian based clubs, can not take part in the competition.
As interesting and as unpredictable as 2020 has been, just how much worse will 2021 be.
Interesting times ahead.
Maybe it will not be all doom and gloom as I may think, but maybe it will be.
Melbourne not the Mecca of the AFL!!!!!!!!

My friends in the medical community are talking vaccine at the end of 2021 at the very earliest.  Which means pretty much what you said about next season is on the cards anchorman. I think the AFL will survive, but it's going to be a very different competition.

I can not see all the victorian clubs surviving. This will be a good thing. I'd argue that the victorian over representation has not been good for the game. Just look at the awards and recognition in relation to the AFLW, just silly. How the hell was Diana Hooker not in the All Australian team,  and why did Storm not get the rising star?  Just a couple of examples of a mad bias which hurts the game overall.

The players should be OK. I think pay cuts are coming, when they do - I think the players association would be amiss to not  argue for long term medical care for players after they leave the game.  Especially around concussion and pain.

On the plus side, the WAFL, the SNFAL  and the Queensland competition are going to come back stronger. Even the league over here is doing better with a limited season of AFL.

A silly question Anchorman, did the AFL competition get bigger than the game?  Or think it was bigger than the game?

Adam, I believe that those running the game thought, and think, they are bigger than the game itself. And the AFL has lost the plot about where the youth that keeps this game alive comes from.

The AFL has been, and continues to be, Vic-centric.  The situation it now finds itself in must act as a wake up call.  So many of their decisions over the last few years (such as ongoing concessions to some clubs) have been divisive, and in many cases a blatant waste of funds.

It’s time for some serious introspection.

With such an unknown situation next year, the AFL will be under a lot more pressure to make the competition more equal.
I am of the belief that some clubs from Melbourne will become a real burden on the AFL financially.
I just wonder what the situation would have been if the breaking of protocols by wives and friends had been out of Melbourne clubs!!!
The AFL said $50:000 fines, dropped to $25:000.Why!!!! Two of the clubs that broke the rules are clubs that are struggling financially.

now there is a report of a fourth club involved. It would seem these Victorian clubs believe that they are immune to what should be happening.
